Alan: Although Minnesota Dentist Walter Palmer believed he was behaving within the limits of law when he slaughtered Cecil, he should still be heaped with opprobrium for participating in "big game hunting," an atavistic practice that has no place in civilized society.

If an individual intends to eat his kills -- especially if "game" is an essential part of one's household economy -- I see a certain "propriety" in killing wild animals.

However, if it is necessary to "thin" populations of "big game," thinning should take place under direct government supervision.

If hunters are involved in "thinning," part of the hunter's contract specifies that no money change hands until the "kill" is presented to vested authorities.

And even then, no payment will be made unless vested authorities certify that the kill was executed in keeping with all laws and regulations.

“What he’ll tell you is that he had the proper legal permits and he had hired several professional guides, so he’s not denying that he may be the person who shot this lion. He is a big-game hunter; he hunts the world over,” Palmer’s spokesman told The Guardian in a statement.
