Smartest And Stupidest Things Said At Last Night's Republican Debate

"The Hard, Central Truth Of Contemporary Conservatism"

Excerpts from the January 28th Republican Presidential Candidate Debate sponsored by Fox News:

Rand Paul:
"The bulk collection of your phone data, the invasion of your privacy did not stop one terrorist attack. I don't think you have to give up your liberty for a false sense of security. When we look at this bulk collection, the court has looked at this. Even the court declared it to be illegal. If we want to collect the records of terrorists, let's do it the old fashioned way."

"We need to make sure... we don't unfairly incarcerate another generation of African-American males. In Ferguson, for every 100 African-American women, there are only 60 African-American men. Drug use is equal between white and black, but three out of four people in prison are black or brown."

[Until] we can prove to the people of this country that illegal immigration is under control, nothing else is going to happen. We are not going to round up and deport 12 million people but we’re not going to hand out citizenship cards, either.

Ben Carson:  If you've got ten people coming to your house and you know one of them is a terrorist, you’re probably going to keep them all out. You know, we probably have to figure out a way to make sure that we keep America safe. Alan: Conservatives are essentially fearful people, continually fretting over "terrifying possibilities" that are less likely to jeorpardize their life, limb or property than lightning striking twice. Since the purpose of terrorism is to imbue enemies with a ceaseless sense of enveloping terror, American conservatives have become international terrorism's best and most dependable ally. In this role, Republicans (and their philosophical bedmates) are committed to living abject lives exactly as their jihadi handlers want them to.
Notably, Americans are nine (9) times more likely to be killed by an American police officer than in a terror attack.

The Caging Of America: Why Do We Lock Up So Many People

John Kasich
The mentally ill, they’ve been stepped on for too long in this society and we’re beginning to treat them. In terms of my faith, look, when I study scripture I know people live in the shadows need a chance. I’m not deciding anybody has to make these decisions the way I do on the basis of what I do. But the time has come to stop ignoring the mentally ill in this country, begin to treat them, and get them on their feet.

Kasich: It was our money, and we brought them back to tend to the mentally ill. Because I don’t think they ought to live in prison or live under a bridge; to treat the drug-addicted so they’re not in an in-and-out-of-the-door policy out of the prisons; and to help the working poor so they don’t live in emergency rooms.
How has it worked? Well, we have treated the drug-addicted in our prisons and we released them in to the community, and our recidivism rate is less than 20%. That’s basically bordering on a miracle because of our great prison director.

Alan: Kasich's admirable plea on behalf of the mentally ill was widely applauded by last night's Republican audience. But when Kasich counseled compassion for drug users, that same audience was pin-drop silent. Deep in the conservative psyche is a core belief that "individual responsibility" is foundational and since drug users are deemed responsible for making the wrong choices that brought about their misery, conservatives believe they -- and they alone -- should be responsible for digging themselves out of their self-created hole.
Datum: When last night's Fox News narrator introduced the candidates at the beginning of the debate, he mispronounced John Kasich's last name, rhyming it with "rich" rather than "dick." This error cuts to the quick of Fox News' sloppiness with accuracy and truth.
