Joe Biden On Anita Hill’s Sexual-Harassment Testimony: "I Owe Her An Apology"
Alan: Recently I spoke with a friend about sexual abuse she experienced at a large corporation with global scope.

The abuse started her first day on the job and continued for four years.

My friend (whom I will call Carol) was a lab scientist.

As a good scientist and a good person, Carol reveres truth and I have always known her to speak her mind in ferocious defense of truth -- even when the views she defends are unpopular.

During our recent conversation Carol repeated several times that "back in the seventies there were no laws against this kind of behavior."

It also bears mention that if she had complained, there was not only a good chance she would lose her job but -- because such abuse had been normalized across the entire culture -- she would find it harder to get a new job and, furthermore, it was likely that such behavior would be "normal" in any future workplace.

"Better the devil you know than flying to the one you know not."

Carol's account of years-long abuse has three parts.

1.) Her very first day at work Carol was given envelopes by two men in her lab, men who would abuse her regularly during the course of her employment. Those envelopes contained "free coupons" for sexual favors including such services as "Free Cunnilingus!" "Free Sodomy!" and "Free Intercourse!" (Carol still has those coupons.)

2.) Routinely, these same two men would approach Carol from behind (typically when she was standing at her lab bench), in order to dry hump her, not infrequently reaching over her shoulders to fondle Carol's breasts, often inserting their hands through the neck of her blouse before she had time to repel them.

3.) Carol's boss was her third workplace abuser -- a man she still sees at "work reunions." This fellow was more of a "leg guy" who tried to get his hand up her skirt whenever possible. Such groping would take place in the employee lounge where "bossman" would enter the room (empty but for Carol), then sidle up to her chair or sofa where the groping would begin. The most egregious instance of abuse by Carol's boss occurred after a Christmas office party when her abuser and his wife offered to take her home. When Carol's boss pulled up to curbside, he asked her if he could "pop inside" to use her bathroom. Knowing that his wife was waiting in the car, Carol acceded to her abuser's request but as soon as they got in the door, he dragged her to the floor and started tearing at her clothing. Carol, who is a small but spunky woman, managed to  turn him away.

Was this behavior more egregious because it took place in The Bible Belt where "good Christians" have always believed whatever the f__ they've wanted to believe, including the "divinely-ordained righteousness of slavery" (which was, in fact, preached from the pulpit) and the widespread presumption of "southern gentlemen" like Roy Moore (for whom nearly half of Alabamians just voted) who, as a "30-something" adult saw fit to make unwanted sexual advances on teenagers as young as 14? Moore's many defenders were eager to point out that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was only 14 when she gave birth.
