Music Performed By My Band At Last Night "Nash Street Tavern" Concert In Hillsborough, NC

Sadly, Alger and Gilly are not included in this photo which was taken before Alex Griffin and Ben "Benja" Newnam joined the band.

Greetings,

We had a great time making music last night as did the audience.

The only disappointment was that my recorder's battery went dead after just one of five verses in "The Weight," a rendition that was our best ever. We were totally "settled into" the song and most of our harmony-choruses were smooth as silk.

Before I had opportunity to install fresh batteries, a really good version of "Feel A Whole Lot Better" was also "lost." Here's our last rehearsal version: https://fridaynightjazzorchestrafinjo.bandcamp.com/track/feel-a-whole-lot-better-11

The decision to start last night's concert with a no-vocal version of "I'm A Man" seemed odd but in the big scheme that was small change.

Perhaps the most surprising musical mishap all night was the sloppy start (and semi-sloppy finish) to "No Expectations," a song whose main body went very well and which usually goes without a hitch.

And although I was very happy with our first public presentation of "Susie Q," an understandable (and easily remedied) miscue caused the guitarists to lop off the last verse.

In addition to "Susie Q," we performed two other "newbies" last night -- Blue Suede Shoes (very well-done with Mark at the helm) and a rousing (and extremely well-received) version of Dan Newnam's composition, "Say It Ain't So" which I cannot yet circulate because it hasn't been copyrighted. "Ain't So" has all the makings of a "hit" - might even become a classic!

Alger's and my collaboration on "Time Won't Let Me" was the best ever and Alger's leads on "Wagon Wheel," "Cripple Creek" and "Hey, Bartender" were spirited and filled with good cheer! (Every member of the band is aware that we are seriously blessed by Alger's side-splitting sense of humor and unflagging determination to have fun.)

John Newnam's renditions of "The Thrill Is Gone," "Rainy Night In Georgia" and "Evil Ways" set new high water marks.

And Mark Roshelli's performance on "Like A Rolling Stone" -- and his guitar solos everywhere -- are extraordinary.

Alex Griffin is starting to make her mark with songs like Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason To Stay," Van Morrison's "Moondance," Amy Winehouse's "Valery" and Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" (sung as a near-duet with Ben Newnam).

In addition to brilliant work on his Dad's "Say It Ain't So," Ben's version of "Summertime" was a tremendous crowd pleaser.

And although bassman Dan -- like all bass men -- is "low man on the totem pole," it's Dan who "keeps it up" and "together."

As always, I hope you have half as much fun listening to these recordings as we did making them.

(With one or two exceptions, the following song order is how last night's concert unfolded.)

"I'm A Man"

"Street Fighting Man"

"Give Me One Reason To Stay Here"

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

I just discovered this photo in a news article advertising "19's" Old Courthouse Lawn Concert last November 19th.
